Meet the Artist Deon Mitchell

Deonoveigh Mitchell is Tl’aashchi’i (Red Bottom People-mother), born for Naahilii (African-American father), her cheii is T’abaahi (Maternal grandfather is Water’s Edge) and her nali is Naahilii (Paternal grandfather is African American). She is originally from the heart of the Navajo Nation, Chinle, AZ.

Deonoveigh’s art is a beautiful blend of both her cultures. The images she creates are inspired by people in her life, childhood memories growing up on the Navajo Nation, and driven by her love of storytelling. Deon is the creator of K’aalogii Kisses (Butterfly Kisses), a virtual platform where she inspires others to live colorfully each day

Deon is a full time art specialist in the Creighton School District in central Phoenix. She credits her students, K-8th graders, with inspiring her with their vibrant imaginations and diverse cultural backgrounds. For the past three years, she has been the Lead Teacher for her district’s Native American Program, coordinating quarterly Family Nights, after-school tutoring, and networking with various Tribal organizations & community members. As she builds and maintains positive connections within her community, Deon showcases her two favorite languages: Education and Art.

Deon will bring her unique talents to the Heard Guild’s first Virtual Educators’ Workshop on March 27, 2021 where she will invite educators to take a closer look at southwestern native plants with storytelling and art making. HMG Student Art is pleased to welcome Deon Mitchell to the Heard Museum!

Deon’s shop, H.E.R. Medicine, is located at 2937 N. 67th Pl., Scottsdale (just south of Old Town).  We invite you to visit her online store, K’aalogii Kisses.
