Dear Members of the Guild,

It has been such a busy few months for the Heard Museum, and I want to offer my most heartfelt thanks for the outstanding service the Guild volunteers have provided over so many years.  The simple truth is that you make the Heard Museum and its programs possible.  On behalf of all of us on staff, please accept our warmest gratitude for all of the work you do.

And what an exciting time it is to be a part of this great institution!  With much enthusiasm, I’d like to give you an update on staff happenings in the Education Department:

On Tuesday, May 30th, we will welcome Sharah Nieto to the team as Director of Education.  Sharah is finishing the school year as a high school art teacher at the Phoenix Collegiate Academy.  She holds a Masters in Studio Art from New York University and prior to PCA, Sharah held positions at the Native American Health Center, the Museum of Latin American Art, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Hamlin School.  Among other responsibilities, Sharah will lead the Heard’s efforts to actively engage and support the educational and teaching community, develop and deliver standards-based curricula and other educational materials, and coordinate school tour efforts and learning activities.  Sharah will also be teaching the new classes of Las Guias.

On another exciting note, please join me in congratulating Shaliyah Ben who has been promoted to Manager of Public Programs.  As you know, Shaliyah has been deeply involved with the museum and its programming for many years and we are thrilled that she will be focusing her many talents on the task of planning and managing many of the Heard’s most dynamic annual programs and events including the Annual Hoop Dance Contest, Holidays at the Heard, Indigenous Peoples Day, Mercado, and First Fridays and Summer Sundays.  Additionally, Shay will oversee the museum’s speaker series programs, develop and implement Creative Aging programs, and oversee family programming including the Hands-On Gallery.

Important note for Las Guias:  As Shaliyah assumes her wider responsibilities, the weekly scheduling and management of Las Guias will transition to another staff colleague.  Until this staffer is identified, weekly schedules for Las Guias will continue to be coordinated by Cassie Lofgreen with oversight from Shaliyah.  We expect to have a new, permanent scheduling contact for Las Guias named shortly, and in the meantime, please continue to direct questions about your shifts to Cassie and Shaliyah.

There is much to celebrate, and more news to come…  Stay tuned, but for now, please join me in wishing congratulations and welcome to our excellent colleagues! The Heard is truly on an exciting path, and I am confident that with these terrific team members, we will all continue to celebrate many more successes in the months and years ahead.
