Guild March General Meeting April 15, Steele Auditorium
Ann-Mary Lutzick has a long association with Arizona Humanities which sponsors many speakers and has been very co-operative and helpful in assisting our Guild and various organizations. We are very appreciative for Humanities help. Ann-Mary has been associated with Arizona Humanities for over 12 years and is a director of Winslow’s Old Trails Museum which has been visited by many of our Guild Members. Her husband is Manager of La Posada.
Elinor and I met her at Pueblo Grande where she gave a very interesting and informative talk on the story of Fred Harvey, the Santa Fe Railway and tourism promotion in the South West. Her presentation today will explore the hotel’s heyday, from 1930 through the second world war and to 1997 when a group of friends secured a National Registry listing and reopened the hotel. Winslow’s proximity to natural and cultural sites has made it an ideal tourism destination

Trip now open to the public. Subject to Change. The Heard Museum invites you to join the inaugural tour of its reinvigorated travel program for Circles Members. Immediately following the opening of the exhibition Frida Kahlo: Her Photos, curator Janet Cantley will lead patrons on this lively exploration of Mexico City. Together we will delve deeply into the soul of this colorful, complex, fascinating, and incredibly rich culture that is Mexico today. Our home base will be the Camino Real Hotel in Polanco, Mexico City’s most verdant and luxurious colonia.

Katsina Marketplace – April 11 in Steele Auditorium
Hello All! Well, our fabulous Fair and Market Place is behind us and we have our exciting and creative Katsina Marketplace coming up soon, on April 11 in Steele Auditorium and we are now soliciting, begging for and groveling for some healthy snacks and water for our Artists and their families. Guest Speakers: Virgil Ortiz & Charles King, nationally recognized expert on Pueblo pottery. Virgil is an artist in clay, clothing, and original ideas. Charles, a noted gallery owner here in the Valley, is the author of two books on Pueblo artists.

Guest Speakers: Jody and Susan Folwell, internationally known potters
Susan is Jody’s daughter. Together they were part of the acclaimed Mothers & Daughters exhibit several years ago.
They will discuss Pueblo life, history, family , and their lives as pottery artists.
All of the speakers have been given wide latitude to decide what they would most like to present to us, but I guarantee it will be exciting, informative, and awesome!

Northern New Mexico – Led by Mark Bahti, the Southwest’s leading expert on Indian Arts. We’ll spend time with many of Marks friends and colleagues who are New Mexico’s leading artists. We’ll visit Acoma Pueblo, Taos for the San Geronimo Feast Day and a day at Ghost Ranch, formerly owned by Marks’ grandfather, Arthur Pack.We’ll spend four nights in Santa Fe at the Inn at Loretto and visit many of different artists in their workshops and studios. And as always with the Guild tours, offer unique and special experiences.

Book Clubs
Connect with other Guild members by joining one of the Guild Book Clubs meeting monthly in members’ homes across the Valley. You choose where you would like to attend. This is an opportunity to read and discuss new books related to American Indian culture — both fiction and non-fiction. If you are interested in becoming a member of an exciting literary group, find a location near your home.
Northeast Guild Book Club will have their next meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at the home of Kathleen Westgard.
The book for discussion is Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom by Tiya Miles.

Grand Gallery Renovation
Interim Director, John Bulla announced recently that the Virginia G. Piper Foundation has awarded the Heard $1.25 million for the Grand Gallery Renovation! This project will combine the Ullman and Lincoln galleries providing approximately 6500 square feet of exhibit space significantly improving our flexibility and ability to mount large traveling shows. This is a major show of support for our Strategic Plan and the direction that the Museum is moving towards. The project is expected to be completed within 2 years.
Remembering Margarete Bagshaw
The Heard Museum mourns the loss of Margarete Bagshaw, latest in a line of talented Native women artists.
Margarete Bagshaw, a modernist painter and the daughter and granddaughter of noted Native artists, died Thursday following a short illness. She was 50. Bagshaw is the daughter of artist Helen Hardin and granddaughter of Santa Clara Pueblo artist Pablita Velarde, who became famous for pursuing art at a time when men dominated the craft. Read More……

April movies at the Heard
Enhance your visit to the Heard with a stop in the museum’s recently renovated
Joel and Lila Harnett Theater, which exhibits films about Native life, culture and art.
Tuesday, April 7, 1 p.m.: Chiefs (2003, 87 min.) This documentary follows a team of American Indian teens from Wyoming Indian High School in the town of Ethete on the Wind River Indian Reservation as they strive to recapture the state basketball championship while battling against poverty, alcoholism, drugs and racism. After graduation, the young men’s next challenge is to convert the pride and success they experience on the basketball court into success in their adult lives, including higher education and employment.
Tuesday, April 14 1 p.m: Lady Warriors (2002, 90 min.) A film that follows the Tuba City High School girls cross-country running team, the Lady Warriors, during their pursuit of an unprecedented fourth consecutive Arizona State Cross-Country Championship in 2000.
Tuesday, April 21 1 p.m: Indian Relay (2013, 56 min.) documents an unheralded aspect of modern-day American Indian life and what it takes to win one of the more exciting forms of horse racing. From the bitter cold of winter to the heat of summer, the film follows teams from three different tribes as they compete across a grueling season.
