HEARD MUSEUM GUILD GENERAL MEETING
Steele Auditorium
January 21, 2015

CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by President Susan Kolman at 10:00 AM.

Susan introduced Alexis Hill, Shop Chair, and requested members speak to Alexis about signing up to volunteer in the Shop.

Mark Scarp, Public Relations Manager, and liaison to the Guild, announced that the Annual Guild Appreciation Dinner which honors the Guild and all that the volunteers do for the Museum, will be held on Thursday, April 23. This year the event will have a Hollywood theme.

Susan welcomed the Circles members.

She also thanked the book sale volunteers.

MUSEUM DIRECTOR & CEO: James Pepper Henry spoke about his decision to accept a position to lead the Thomas Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He said this opportunity would allow him to be reunited with his family and close friends and to become more involved with his tribal community. He will continue a relationship with the Heard through the Consortium of American Indian Art Museums. He indicated that an interim president will be announced soon.

INTRODUCTION OF SPEAKER: David Rothberg introduced our speaker Terry DeWald who has had a long term relationship with the Heard. Terry then gave a comprehensive talk about baskets while displaying hundreds of baskets some from as early as the nineteenth century.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Pat Kilburn, Fair Chair, encouraged members to sign up for the “Prepare for the Fair” series of classes on January 29, February 5, and February 12. The fee is $15.00. There is an additional $10.00 fee for a basket making kit at the first class. She also showed photos and spoke about the new activities that are being done throughout the Fair and Best of Show. She reminded everyone to take the sheet provided on every chair to see all the volunteer opportunities and to contact Lucille Shanahan, Volunteer Placement Chair to let her know when and where members would like to work.

After a short break, the meeting reconvened at 11:35 AM.

BYLAWS: Sandy Eiker, a member of the Guild Bylaws Committee, announced the distribution of the proposed Guild Bylaws which will be voted upon after discussion at the February Guild meeting. The proposed bylaws were printed with the January Artifacts and will be reprinted with the February Artifacts.
