Apache Camp

This year, Indian Market will present an area dedicated to the art and cultures of the Apache people of the Southwest.

You will not be able to miss the grassy area in the middle of the grounds that will contain a wickiup, traditional structure built out of willow branches, and used as temporary homes historically by the nomadic Apaches as they traversed the land, moving with the seasons.
Inside the Apache camp will be over 20 of the elders from White Mountain, San Carlos, Camp Verde, and Jicarilla.  You will be able to watch them create the things that were so important to their way of life in the past, and speak to them “up close and personal” about what they are making, and how what they are doing today has been so perfectly passed down to them by their ancestors.

There will be strolling flute players in the camp area, as well as royalty from four Apache bands, as Miss San Carlos, Miss White Mountain, Miss Yavapai Apache, and Miss Tonto Apache will be in the camp at different times.

Skateboarding is a hugely important part of the present for Apache youngsters.   Doug Miles, an accomplished Apache artist for many years, will also be connected to the Camp with 8 of the young and talented Apache skateboard team from San Carlos.  There will be demonstrations done by these talented kids at certain times.  Douglas Miles is well known for his beautifully painted skate boards, which have been on display all over the United States, including a recent exhibit at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.
Don’t miss this chance to visit with and learn about our Apache neighbors.
